The Conroe concrete driveway guide
Everything that decides whether a driveway in Montgomery County lasts thirty years or cracks in five, in the order the decisions get made: the ground, the thickness, the joints, the pour, and the paperwork.
A concrete driveway is a simple thing to describe and an easy thing to get wrong. It is a slab of concrete a few inches thick, resting on the ground, carrying vehicles. Everything that determines whether it survives happens either below it, where nobody can see, or in the first few hours after the truck leaves. That is why two quotes for the same driveway in Conroe can differ by a third and both be honest, and why the cheapest square-foot price is so frequently the most expensive slab.
Start with what the slab is sitting on
Conroe sits on the Gulf Coastal Plain about forty miles north of Houston, and the soil here was deposited by ancient rivers and coastal processes rather than weathered out of bedrock. The USDA official series description for the Conroe series, typed in this county, records gravelly loamy fine sand at the surface passing down into sandy clay loam and sandy clay, formed in unconsolidated acid sandy clays and sands of the Willis Formation. Permeability through the clay horizons is described as slow.
The Splendora series, formed on Lissie Formation sediments and also mapped across this county, adds the detail that matters most for flatwork. USDA classifies it as moderately well to somewhat poorly drained, records runoff as medium to high, and states that a perched water table sits between fifteen and twenty-eight inches deep from December through April.
Put those together and you have the local design problem in one sentence: rain moves quickly through the sandy top layer, stops at the clay a foot or two down, and sits there for months. A driveway poured onto dry September ground is bearing on something noticeably softer by late January. The middle of a slab is partly protected from this because its own mass moderates the moisture underneath it. The outer eighteen inches is not, which is why the classic Conroe driveway crack runs parallel to the edge rather than across the middle.

Thickness: four inches, six inches, and why it is not a detail
Four inches is the residential standard for a driveway carrying cars and light pickups, and for a great many city lots in Conroe that is the right answer. Six inches is the usual step up, and around here it earns its keep more often than people expect.
Think about what parks on a Montgomery County driveway. A three-quarter ton truck. A boat and trailer coming back off Lake Conroe. A fifth wheel that sits in the same spot from October to March. A delivery truck that has to swing across the apron. Each of those loads a slab far harder than a sedan, and the concentrated static loads are worse than the moving ones, because the soil under a parked trailer never gets a chance to recover.
The economics are straightforward. Adding two inches over the parking area during the pour costs the extra concrete and a little more steel. Adding it after the slab has cracked costs demolition, haul-off, and the whole slab again. A good quote prices both so you can see the difference rather than guessing at it.
Subgrade and base: the part you never see
On a well-run job, the loose sandy topsoil and anything organic gets stripped off, the exposed ground gets compacted, and base material is brought in and compacted where the native soil will not hold grade. On a badly run job, the forms go on top of whatever is there and the concrete does the rest.
Two details separate the good version from the adequate one. The first is proof-rolling: driving a loaded vehicle over the prepared subgrade so soft spots reveal themselves before anything is poured on them. The second is carrying the compacted base out past the form line rather than stopping it flush with the edge of the slab. That extra strip of compacted material supports the part of the slab most exposed to seasonal moisture swing, and it is one of the cheapest durability improvements available on a new pour. It is also one of the most commonly skipped.
Reinforcement, and the thing nobody tells you about it
Reinforcement does not stop concrete cracking. Any contractor who implies otherwise is overselling. What steel does is hold the two sides of a crack together so the slab keeps behaving as one piece and the edges do not step apart under a wheel. On a drive that will see a loaded truck or a trailer, that is precisely the failure being designed against.
Position matters more than presence. Welded wire mesh or rebar does its job near mid-depth, held there on chairs. Laid flat on the subgrade and hooked up with a rake during the pour, which is a real practice and not a rare one, it ends up near the bottom of the slab where it contributes very little. This is worth asking about specifically, because both approaches produce a quote that says the same thing.
Joints: deciding where the crack goes
Concrete shrinks as it cures. It will crack. The entire purpose of control joints is to decide where. The working rule crews use is that joint spacing in feet runs roughly two to three times the slab thickness in inches, so a four-inch slab gets joints every eight to twelve feet and a six-inch slab every twelve to eighteen. Panels are kept close to square, because a long thin panel cracks across the middle regardless of how the spacing was calculated.
Joints are cut or tooled to about a quarter of the slab depth, which is enough to make that line the weakest section. Sawcutting has a timing window: too early and the edge ravels, too late and the slab has already cracked wherever it preferred. The two places joints are most often missed are re-entrant corners, where a slab wraps around a post or an obstruction, and the point where a wide drive narrows into the approach. How the job runs
- Layout and elevations. Dimensions marked out, and the fall worked out so water leaves the slab rather than heading for the garage.
- Demolition, if there is a slab to remove. Usually about a day on a typical residential drive, and the point at which the reason the old one failed becomes visible.
- Subgrade preparation. Stripping, compacting, digging out soft material, and bringing in base. Where a quote is vague, this is what it is vague about.
- Forming and steel. Forms set to line and grade, reinforcement placed and supported, tie-in elevations at the garage, sidewalk, street, or culvert confirmed.
- The pour. A single morning on most residential drives. Concrete placed, screeded, floated, and finished, with the finishing crew sized so the slab is not still being worked as it stiffens.
- Jointing and curing. Joints cut or tooled, then curing kept up rather than stopped once the surface looks dry. Surface durability is largely won or lost here.
- Waiting. Foot traffic in a day or two, cars usually about a week, heavier vehicles longer. The contractor should give you the specific dates rather than a rule of thumb.
Summer pours are a different job
Placing concrete in Southeast Texas in July is harder than the same job in March. Heat accelerates the set, which shortens the finishing window, and when surface water evaporates faster than bleed water can reach the top, fine plastic shrinkage cracks open while the concrete is still soft. Crews handle it with early starts, shading, adjustments to the mix, and enough people on site to keep pace with a slab that will not wait. What it costs
ConcreteNetwork's published price data, updated 14 July 2026, puts a plain broom-finish slab at $6.50 to $10.50 per square foot installed, driveways overall at $5 to $21 per square foot depending on the finish, and stamped work at $10 to $20. The same source gives a 2025 national average of $179.95 per cubic yard for ready-mix concrete. Those are national figures and should be treated as a bracket rather than a local price.
What moves a real Conroe quote inside that bracket is fairly predictable: slab thickness, whether there is a slab to demolish and haul off, how much subgrade work the lot needs, whether a truck can reach the pour or the concrete has to be pumped, and whether the drive crosses a ditch. Permits and the culvert question
Where the property sits decides who you talk to. Inside Conroe city limits, work in the public right of way and anything tying into a city street runs through the City of Conroe, handled by Building Inspections and Permits through the city's OpenGov permit portal.
Outside the city on a county road, a driveway that crosses a bar ditch is a county matter handled by the Montgomery County commissioner precinct covering the address. The precincts publish different arrangements. Precinct 3 publishes a policy where the resident supplies the pipe and marks the location, the precinct submits the 811 utility locate request, and precinct crews set the culvert to grade on cement-stabilised sand within three to seven business days, charged per foot by pipe diameter. Precinct 4 publishes a different arrangement where an inspector determines the required pipe size and the property owner installs it. One thing that catches people out: Texas does not issue a statewide general or residential contractor licence, and concrete work is not licensed at the state level. There is no state licence number to look up for this trade. Cities can require contractors to register with them in order to pull permits, and those requirements differ from city to city.
What belongs on the quote
- Square footage and slab thickness, stated separately so two prices can be compared
- What happens to the subgrade: how much is stripped, what base goes back, whether it is compacted
- Reinforcement type and how it will be supported during the pour
- Joint layout and spacing, and whether joints are sawcut or tooled
- Demolition and haul-off priced as a line, not assumed away
- How the slab ties into the garage, any sidewalk, and the street or the culvert
- Curing method, and the dates for foot traffic and for vehicles
- Who files any permit, and whether with the city or the commissioner precinct
- A stated allowance and a written change order process for whatever demolition reveals
