A Shop Slab Is Only as Good as the Pad Under It

A shop slab does two jobs at once. The perimeter is a foundation, holding up a metal building or a stick-framed structure and taking the anchor bolts that keep it there in a Gulf Coast wind event. The interior is a working floor that has to take a vehicle, a lift, a welding table, or a tractor without cracking into pieces. Those are different requirements and they are why a barn slab is not a big patio. On acreage around Conroe, Willis, and Montgomery the site question comes first: pads for outbuildings are usually built up out of imported fill because the natural ground sits low and wet, and a slab is only as good as the fill under it. Fill that has been placed in thick lifts and left to settle on its own is the single most common reason a shop floor cracks in its first two years. Getting that right is dull, invisible once the concrete is down, and worth more than anything you can see.

The edge. A patio floats on the ground and carries nothing but itself and the furniture. A shop slab carries a building, which means a thickened perimeter or a turned-down edge designed for that load, anchor bolts positioned to the building drawings, and a level of dimensional accuracy that a patio never needs. Setting a metal building on a slab whose edge was not designed for it is a problem that surfaces at erection, when the anchor pattern does not line up and nothing about the fix is cheap.
Enough to get the finished floor above the water that stands on the site in a wet week, which on flat Montgomery County ground is often more than the eye suggests. The number comes from shooting elevations on the site rather than from a rule of thumb, and it should account for where the water goes once the pad displaces it. A pad that solves its own drainage by moving water into a neighbour or into the house is not solved.
Reinforcement does not stop concrete from cracking, and it is worth being clear about that up front. What it does is hold the two sides of a crack together so the slab keeps acting as one piece and the edges do not step apart under a wheel. On a floor that will see a tractor or a loaded trailer, that is exactly the failure being designed against, so reinforcement earns its place. On a light storage floor with good joints it matters less.
It is possible and it is a common source of expensive corrections. Anchor bolt patterns, column spacing, and door locations come off the building supplier drawings, and a slab poured before those exist has to be guessed. Where the sequence cannot be avoided, the safer approach is to agree the building footprint and anchor layout in writing first, even if the steel is not ordered yet.
It depends on what happens on it. A sealed floor resists oil, fuel, and staining and is easier to sweep, which matters in a workshop and matters less in a hay barn. Sealers are also a maintenance item rather than a one-time decision, and re-coating intervals vary by product and traffic. It is a reasonable thing to ask about when the finish is being specified, since the surface preparation differs depending on the answer.
