RV Pads: what homeowners want to know

How thick should an RV pad be?

Thicker than a driveway. Four inches is a car standard and an RV is not a car: a large fifth wheel or motorhome can put more weight through four jack pads than a sedan puts through its whole footprint. Six inches is a common starting point for the parking area, with additional thickness or thickened footings where the jacks and wheels land. The right answer depends on the specific rig, which is why the weight and the axle layout are worth having to hand when you ask for a quote.

How big does the pad need to be?

Bigger than the vehicle, and by more than people first estimate. Slide-outs extend the width, the tongue or hitch extends the length, doors need clearance to open onto something solid, and stepping off the last stair into mud defeats the point. Measuring the rig with everything deployed and adding walking room on the door side is the practical method, and it usually adds several feet to the number in someone is head.

Does a generator or shop equipment slab need anything different?

It needs the same attention to bearing and a different attention to detail. Standby generators and compressors have anchor patterns and vibration to deal with, and conduit or fuel line penetrations that need to be placed before the pour rather than cored afterwards. Will a pad crack if a trailer sits on it all winter?

It can, and the mechanism is worth knowing. A pad built for the load spreads it enough that this does not matter. A pad built like a sidewalk does not, and the crack shows up under the jacks rather than randomly across the slab.

Can a pad be added onto an existing driveway?

Yes, and it is common, but the new work should be jointed away from the old rather than tied into it. Two slabs of different thickness, different age, and different loading will move differently, and a rigid connection between them just decides where the crack goes. An isolation joint at the seam lets each one behave as it wants to.
