How do I know whether my driveway needs replacing or repairing?

Look at whether the pieces have moved relative to each other. A slab with two or three tight cracks, no step across them, and edges you cannot catch a shoe on is a repair. A slab where panels sit at different heights, where cracks run continuously through most of the drive, or where the edges crumble under pressure has lost the structure that made it a slab, and patching only buys a season. The middle case, a sound panel that has simply dropped, is a lifting job rather than either.

What does a concrete driveway cost here?

ConcreteNetwork, updated 14 July 2026, puts a plain broom-finish slab at $6.50 to $10.50 per square foot installed, driveways overall at $5 to $21 depending on the finish, and stamped work at $10 to $20. Multiply by your square footage for a bracket, then expect the real quote to move within it based on thickness, how much demolition is involved, how much subgrade work the lot needs, and whether a truck can reach the pour or it has to be pumped.

How thick should my driveway be?

Four inches is the residential standard for cars and light pickups. Six is the step up, and it earns its place wherever something heavy parks in one spot: a three-quarter ton truck, a boat trailer, a fifth wheel, or the section a delivery truck swings across. Adding thickness during the pour costs the extra concrete. Adding it afterwards costs the whole slab.

How long does the whole job take?

The site work is shorter than people expect and the waiting is longer. Demolition and haul-off on a typical residential drive is about a day, forming and subgrade prep another day or two, and the pour itself is one morning. Then it cures. Foot traffic is usually fine within a day or two, cars generally wait about a week, and heavier vehicles wait longer. The contractor should give you the specific dates for your pour.

Can I park on it as soon as it looks dry?

No, and this is the single most common way a new drive gets damaged. Concrete looking dry on the surface says almost nothing about its strength; it keeps gaining strength for weeks after placing. Driving on it early does not usually produce a visible crack on day eight, it produces a slab that reaches a lower final strength and shows it years later. Wait for the dates you were given.

How do I check a concrete contractor in Texas?

Not through a state license, because there is not one. Texas does not issue a statewide general or residential contractor license, and concrete work is not licensed at the state level, so there is no number to look up and any site offering to verify one is describing something that does not exist. What is worth checking instead is the liability coverage the contractor carries, a written scope that names thickness and what happens to the subgrade, and flatwork of the same kind nearby that you can go and look at.

What is the ground under Conroe like?

Sandy at the surface over sandy clay underneath. The USDA official series description for the Conroe series, typed in Montgomery County, records gravelly loamy fine sand in the upper horizons over sandy clay loam and sandy clay formed in fluviomarine deposits of the Willis Formation, with permeability through the clay described as slow. The Splendora series, formed on Lissie Formation sediments, is the other common one: moderately well to somewhat poorly drained, with runoff recorded as medium to high.

Why does that matter for a slab?

Because water moves fast through the sand and then stops at the clay. USDA records a perched water table on the Splendora series between fifteen and twenty-eight inches deep from December through April, which is exactly the depth a driveway subgrade cares about. The result is bearing soil that is firm at the end of a dry summer and soft in late winter, and a slab that has to span that difference.

Is freeze and thaw a concern in Conroe?

Far less than it is in a northern market, and the surface durability problems here have different causes. What damages flatwork in Southeast Texas is more often heat during placement, curing stopped too early, water worked into the surface during finishing, and subgrade that softens under a wet season. Advice written for a hard-winter climate is not wrong so much as aimed at a different problem.

Why do cracks appear along the edge of the drive rather than the middle?

The edge is where soil moisture swings hardest. The middle of a slab is shaded by its own mass and stays near a steady moisture content, while the outer foot or so dries out in an August drought and takes on water in a wet December. The slab ends up spanning a soft spot and cracks parallel to the edge. Carrying compacted base out past the form line is the cheapest thing that reduces it.

Do tree roots really lift concrete around here?

They do, and in the wooded parts of this county it is the most common flatwork failure there is. The signature is distinctive: a slab that is otherwise sound with a single high point and cracks radiating away from it, usually within the root plate of a mature pine or live oak. It is a layout problem rather than a concrete problem, and pouring a thicker slab in the same place does not settle it.

How the slab gets built

Does a driveway need reinforcement?

Reinforcement does not stop concrete cracking, and anyone who says it does is overselling it. What it does is hold the two sides of a crack together so the slab keeps acting as one piece and the edges do not step apart under a wheel. On a drive that will see a loaded truck or a trailer, that is exactly the failure you are designing against. What matters as much as having it is where it sits: at mid-depth on chairs, not lying on the subgrade.

How far apart should control joints be?

The working rule crews use is that joint spacing in feet is roughly two to three times the slab thickness in inches, so a four-inch slab gets joints every eight to twelve feet and a six-inch slab every twelve to eighteen. Panels should stay close to square, because long thin panels crack across the middle regardless of spacing. Joints are cut about a quarter of the slab depth, deep enough to control where the shrinkage goes.

Sawcut joints or tooled joints, does it matter?

Both work and both are normal. Tooled joints are formed into the wet concrete during finishing and give a rounded profile. Sawcut joints are cut after the slab has set enough to hold an edge, and they give a crisper line, which matters more on a visible patio than a drive. The timing on sawcutting is the part that requires judgement: too early and the edge ravels, too late and the slab has already cracked where it wanted to.

What happens to the subgrade before the pour?

On a well-run job, loose sand, organics, and anything soft comes off, the ground is compacted, and base material is brought in where the native soil will not hold grade. On a badly run job, the forms go on top of whatever is there. This is the part of the work you cannot see afterwards and the part that decides the outcome, which is why the quote should say what happens to it rather than leaving it implied.

Does the time of year affect the pour?

It affects the working window more than the outcome. In a Southeast Texas summer, concrete stiffens faster, the finishing window shortens, and plastic shrinkage cracking becomes a real risk if the surface dries faster than bleed water can reach it. Crews handle it with early starts, shading, adjustments to the mix, and enough people on site to keep up. A decorative stamp job in July is harder work than the same job in March.

Culvert crossings and rural approaches

My drive crosses a ditch. What changes?

The pipe under the crossing becomes the first decision rather than the last. It carries the ditch flow past the driveway, so it has to be sized against the water the ditch takes, and it has to be in the ground and set to grade before anything is formed over it. The concrete is then built to the pipe, not the other way round. Forming an approach and expecting the pipe to accommodate it is the version of this that ends with a slab coming back out.

What size culvert does a driveway need?

That is set by the ditch rather than by preference, and it depends on how much water the ditch carries and what sits upstream of the crossing. Undersize it and the ditch backs up, water crosses the driveway instead of going under it, and the fill under the approach washes out. Oversize it and you have paid for pipe you did not need. The practical instruction is simple: settle the size before buying pipe, because the wrong diameter is an expensive thing to have leaning against a fence.

Why does the approach crack before the rest of the drive?

Two reasons, and they compound. The approach sits on fill placed over a pipe, and fill settles more than undisturbed ground unless it is compacted in thin lifts. It is also the part of the drive every vehicle crosses at an angle, often loaded, at the point where the road edge itself flexes under traffic. Compacted backfill over the pipe and extra thickness across the crossing are the two things that keep it intact, and both are cheap while the ditch is open and expensive afterwards.

Can a gravel approach be converted to concrete?

Often yes, and the existing pipe is the first question rather than the concrete. A crossing that has been under gravel for twenty years may be crushed, silted up, or sitting at a grade that no longer matches the ditch, and none of that is visible until the gravel comes off. Finding out before the concrete is ordered is considerably cheaper than finding out after the forms are set, so a look inside the pipe belongs early.

Decisions worth thinking about

Concrete or gravel for a long rural drive?

Both are legitimate and the decision is mostly about length and maintenance. Gravel costs far less per square foot up front, which matters enormously across a few hundred feet, but it needs topping up, it migrates in heavy rain, and on a slope it washes. Concrete is a much larger single number and then largely stops asking for anything. A common compromise out on acreage is concrete at the approach and the parking area, where the wear and the mess concentrate, and gravel along the run.

Concrete or asphalt?

Concrete typically costs more to install and lasts longer, while asphalt is cheaper up front and needs periodic sealing and eventual resurfacing. In this climate, the heat argument runs toward concrete: asphalt softens in sustained high temperatures in a way concrete does not. Color and appearance push the same way for most people here. Neither is the wrong answer, but the ten-year comparison is closer than the quotes suggest.

Is stamped concrete worth the extra?

It depends on how much you value the appearance and whether you will keep up the maintenance. Stamped work costs meaningfully more, mostly in labor, and it is normally sealed, which means a resealing cycle for as long as you own it. That cycle belongs in the comparison, because the honest number is the ten-year cost rather than the quote. Where a patio is the main outdoor room of the house, plenty of people decide it is worth it.

Should I seal my driveway?

Sealing the joints and any cracks on a sound slab is worthwhile, because it keeps water out of the one place where water does real damage, which is underneath. Whole-surface sealers are a different question: decorative work is normally sealed as part of the system, while a plain broom-finish drive can go a long life without one. What sealing does not do is fix a slab that has moved, and it should never be sold as though it will.

Some cracking appeared in the first year. Is that normal?

Fine shrinkage cracking is expected in any slab, which is precisely what control joints exist for: to give the shrinkage a planned place to go. A tight crack with no step across it and no change over time is a maintenance item best sealed. What is not normal is a crack that widens over months, a step where one side has dropped, or cracking that ignores the joints entirely, and any of those is worth having somebody look at the ground rather than the concrete.
