The vocabulary on a concrete quote
Concrete quotes are written in a mix of trade shorthand and materials language, and it is hard to compare two prices when half the words are doing unfamiliar work. These are the terms that turn up most often, in roughly the order a project meets them: the ground first, then the mix, then the joints, then the finish.
- Flatwork
- The trade name for horizontal concrete: driveways, patios, walkways, garage and shop floors, and slabs generally. It distinguishes this work from vertical concrete such as walls and footings, and it is the word a contractor is most likely to use for what you are buying.
- Subgrade
- The native ground a slab ultimately bears on, once loose material and organics have been stripped off. Around Conroe the subgrade is usually sandy at the surface with sandy clay below, and its strength varies through the year. Almost every long-term problem with a slab is a subgrade story rather than a concrete story.
- Base course
- Imported granular material, usually crushed stone or select fill, placed and compacted between the subgrade and the slab. It spreads load, gives a uniform surface to pour on, and helps break the moisture connection between clay and concrete. Carrying it out past the edge of the slab is one of the cheapest durability improvements available.
- Compaction
- Mechanically densifying soil or base material so it stops settling under load. Fill placed in thin lifts and compacted as it goes performs. Fill dumped and levelled does not, and it announces itself within a few years as a slab that has dropped. This is invisible once the concrete is down, which is why it belongs on the quote.
- Perched water table
- Groundwater held above the regional water table by a layer that water cannot pass through quickly. USDA records one on the Splendora soil series, common in Montgomery County, sitting between fifteen and twenty-eight inches deep from December through April. It is the reason subgrade strength here is seasonal.
- Willis Formation
- The geologic unit whose sandy and clayey deposits the Conroe soil series formed in, described by USDA as unconsolidated acid sandy clays and sands of fluviomarine origin. The name turns up in local geotechnical language because it explains the sand-over-clay profile under much of this area.
- Slump
- A field measure of how wet and workable a concrete mix is, taken by filling a standard cone and measuring how far the concrete slumps when the cone is lifted. Higher slump is easier to place and finish and, past a point, weaker. Water added on site to make a load easier to work is the classic way a slab loses strength before it is even finished.
- Compressive strength
- How much load concrete can take before it crushes, expressed in pounds per square inch and measured on test cylinders at a set age. It is the headline number on a mix specification, and it is a specification for the mix rather than a promise about the finished slab, which also depends on placement and curing.
- Bleed water
- Water that rises to the surface of freshly placed concrete as the solids settle. Finishing while bleed water is still on the surface works it back into the top layer, producing a weak skin that scales or dusts later. Waiting for the bleed to go is a large part of what separates a durable surface from a poor one.
- Curing
- Keeping concrete moist and at a workable temperature after placement so the cement can keep hydrating and the slab keeps gaining strength. It is not the same thing as drying. Curing stopped early is one of the most common causes of a surface that later flakes, and it costs almost nothing to do properly.
- Control joint
- A deliberate line of weakness, cut or tooled into a slab, that decides where shrinkage cracking happens. Concrete will crack; joints make the crack land somewhere planned and straight. Spacing in feet is generally two to three times the slab thickness in inches, and the cut is about a quarter of the slab depth.
- Isolation joint
- A full-depth separation, usually a compressible strip, between a slab and something it must not be rigidly tied to: a house foundation, a column, a step, or an older slab. It lets the two move independently. Pouring a patio hard against a house without one transfers movement from one to the other.
- Construction joint
- The joint formed where one pour stops and the next begins, usually because the slab is too large to place in a single day. It is a planned interruption rather than a defect, and where it lands should be a decision rather than an accident of when the trucks ran out.
- Sawcutting
- Cutting control joints with a saw after the slab has set enough to hold a clean edge. Timing is the whole skill: too early and the edge ravels, too late and the concrete has already cracked wherever it wanted to. Early-entry saws exist specifically to widen that window.
- Welded wire reinforcement
- A grid of steel wires, supplied in sheets or rolls, used to hold cracked concrete together across the crack. It only works if it is held near mid-depth on chairs. Laid on the subgrade and hooked up with a rake during the pour, it ends up at the bottom of the slab where it does almost nothing.
- Rebar
- Deformed steel bar, tied into a grid, used where more capacity is needed than wire mesh provides: heavier slabs, thickened edges, and areas carrying concentrated loads. Like mesh, its position through the slab depth matters more than its presence.
- Fibre reinforcement
- Synthetic or steel fibres mixed through the concrete rather than placed as a grid. Fibres help control the fine cracking that happens while concrete is still plastic and add toughness, but they are not a substitute for steel where a slab has to hold a crack closed under wheel loads.
- Thickened edge
- A section of slab made deeper along an edge or under a load path, formed by digging a trench at the perimeter before the pour. It gives extra capacity where wheels run onto the slab and where a building wall bears on it, and it is far cheaper as part of the original pour than as a later repair.
- Turned-down edge
- The same idea as a thickened edge, used where a slab supports a structure such as a metal building or a detached garage. It is the point at which a slab stops being flatwork and starts being a foundation, and it is sized for the building rather than for the floor.
- Apron
- The section of driveway immediately in front of a garage door, or the section where a drive meets the street. It takes every vehicle entry, sits where two different structures meet, and is frequently the first part of a drive to fail. Replacing an apron alone is a legitimate and much smaller job.
- Driveway approach
- Where a private drive meets the public road, including any ditch crossing. Outside city limits in Montgomery County this is the part that involves the commissioner precinct, because it sits in the county right of way and usually requires a culvert.
- Culvert
- The pipe that carries roadside ditch flow underneath a driveway. Size is set by the drainage it has to carry, not by preference, and the precinct determines it. An undersized or crushed culvert backs the ditch up and washes out the fill under the approach.
- Cement-stabilised sand
- Sand mixed with a small proportion of cement, used as bedding and backfill where a firm, well-graded support is needed. Montgomery County Precinct 3 states it sets culverts to grade on cement-stabilised sand as part of its installation policy.
- Broom finish
- The standard exterior flatwork surface, made by dragging a broom across the concrete after floating to leave fine parallel texture. It is slip-resistant, cheap, and durable, and it remains the default for driveways for good reasons.
- Exposed aggregate
- A finish where the surface paste is washed or retarded away to reveal the stone in the mix. It is textured, hides dirt well, and reads as a more finished surface than a broom job, at a higher price and with its own maintenance expectations.
- Stamped concrete
- Concrete pressed with patterned mats while still plastic to imitate stone, brick, or timber, usually combined with colour. The stamping window is short, and it gets shorter in summer heat, which is why decorative pours need larger crews and earlier starts than plain ones.
- Integral colour
- Pigment mixed through the whole batch of concrete rather than applied to the surface. It costs more than a surface treatment and fades less visibly, because wear exposes more of the same colour rather than grey concrete underneath.
- Scaling
- Loss of the surface layer of a slab, leaving a rough, pitted face. It comes from a weak surface skin, usually created by water worked in during finishing, finishing over bleed water, or curing stopped too early. It is a durability problem rather than a structural one.
- Spalling
- Concrete breaking away in flakes or chunks, often at an edge or around a crack. Distinct from scaling in that it usually involves more depth and frequently has a specific cause, such as an edge that was loaded before it had strength or corrosion in shallow reinforcement.
- Slab lifting
- Raising a settled but intact slab back toward grade by injecting material through small drilled ports to fill the void beneath it. Also called slabjacking or foam lifting depending on the material used. It is far less disruptive than replacement and only works while the panel is still one piece.
- Plastic shrinkage cracking
- Fine cracks that open in the surface while concrete is still plastic, when surface water evaporates faster than bleed water can replace it. Hot, dry, windy conditions cause it, which makes it a genuine Southeast Texas summer concern and the reason crews shade, mist, and start early.
