Concrete driveways in Willis

The older streets in Willis carry short driveways on small lots, most of them original to the house and most of them thinner than anything anybody would pour today. Those slabs fail from the edges inward. There is no shoulder of compacted base beyond the form line, the outer foot of soil dries and swells with the season, and a crack tracks parallel to the edge before anything happens in the middle. Replacement on those lots is a straightforward job and the main decision is whether to widen while the forms are out, because a driveway sized for a 1960s sedan is tight for a modern pickup.

Out toward the lake the questions change entirely. Properties on larger parcels have long drives, frequently crossing a bar ditch to reach a county road, and that puts the culvert at the front of the conversation rather than the concrete. It also puts trailers in the picture. A bass boat, a pontoon, or a fifth wheel spends most of the year parked on the same few square feet, and a four-inch slab poured to a driveway standard is not what that load wants. Thicker sections where the trailer sits are cheap while the truck is on site and expensive later.

Drainage on the north side deserves specific attention because the ground is flat and the surface soil is sandy. Water soaks in quickly, reaches the denser clay a couple of feet down, and then travels sideways rather than continuing down. Under a driveway that means saturated bearing soil for weeks at a stretch through a wet winter, and it is why grading the drive to shed water off the edge matters more here than the slope of the lot suggests.
