What Happens When an RV Parks on a Four-Inch Slab

A fifth wheel does not load a driveway the way a car does. The weight is concentrated, it sits for months, and here the ground is softest just then.

Lake Conroe means boats, and Montgomery County acreage means trailers, and both of those end up parked on somebody’s driveway. A surprising number of them end up parked on four inches of concrete poured for a sedan.

Here is what that does to the slab.

Point loads are not the same as vehicle loads

A car spreads its weight over four contact patches and then drives away. The soil underneath compresses slightly and recovers.

A fifth wheel does something different. A large chunk of its weight goes through a handful of jack pads, which are small, rigid, and concentrated. The rest goes through tyres that sit in exactly the same position for weeks. Nothing recovers, because nothing moves.

Concentrated static loading is the harshest thing you can do to a residential slab, and it is what most trailer parking amounts to.

And the timing works against you

Around Conroe, the ground under a slab is at its weakest in winter. USDA records a perched water table on the Splendora soil series, common across this county, sitting fifteen to twenty-eight inches deep from December through April. That is the depth range a driveway subgrade sits in.

Now consider when an RV or a boat is most likely to be parked and not moved: October through March. The heaviest static load arrives at precisely the point in the year when the bearing soil is softest.

What the failure looks like

It is recognisable. A depression forms under the jack pads or under one wheel position, and cracks radiate out from it. The rest of the slab is fine. The concrete has not failed as a material; it has been asked to span a hole that developed underneath it.

Sometimes it is subtler than that and just shows up as a panel that has settled slightly, with a step at the nearest joint. That version is a lifting candidate rather than a replacement, which is a much better outcome.

What the slab should have been

Six inches is the common starting point for an area where an RV, a loaded trailer, or equipment parks, with additional thickness or a thickened section where the jacks and wheels land. The actual number depends on the specific rig, which is why the weight and axle layout are worth having to hand when asking for a quote.

Underneath, the base matters as much as the concrete. The sandy surface soil here will not carry point loads on its own, so a compacted base built up over stripped subgrade is doing real structural work. And reinforcement sized for the load, held at the correct depth on chairs rather than laid on the ground, is what keeps a crack from stepping apart under a tyre.

Size it for the rig, not the footprint

The other thing people underestimate is area. Measuring a trailer closed up and adding nothing is how you end up with a pad you cannot use comfortably. Slide-outs extend the width. The tongue or hitch extends the length. Doors need clearance to open onto something solid, and stepping off the bottom step into mud defeats the point of pouring a pad at all.

Measure the rig with everything deployed, add walking room on the door side, and it will be several feet bigger than the number in your head.

Adding a pad to an existing driveway

Common, and worth doing right. The new pad should be jointed away from the old slab rather than tied into it. Two slabs of different thickness, different age, and different loading will move differently, and a rigid connection between them just decides where the crack forms. An isolation joint at the seam lets each behave as it wants to.

What to do if it has already happened

If the panel is still in one piece, injection lifting can raise it back toward grade and fill the void underneath, which is far less disruptive than replacement. If it has broken into several pieces, there is nothing left to lift as a unit.

The short version

Four inches is right for cars. It is not a compromise or a cheap option; it is the correct answer for that loading. It is simply not the answer for something that weighs several tons and sits in one place all winter, and the extra concrete costs a great deal less during the pour than the whole slab costs afterwards.
