Long driveways on acreage
Out toward Montgomery, Cut and Shoot, and Splendora, a drive is measured in hundreds of feet rather than tens. That changes the arithmetic on every decision, and it changes which decisions matter.
A suburban driveway is one slab doing one job. A rural driveway is three: an approach that crosses a ditch and takes every vehicle at an angle, a long run that mostly needs to carry a truck and shed water, and a turnaround or parking area near the house that takes static loads and manoeuvring. Treating them as one uniform slab means one of the three is wrong, and in practice it is nearly always the approach that is underbuilt.
The approach comes first, and it is not yours alone
Where a drive meets a county road across a bar ditch, the crossing sits in the county right of way and the commissioner precinct is involved before any concrete is ordered. The precinct sets the culvert size, because the size is a function of the drainage the ditch carries rather than a preference, and that is a service rather than an obstacle.
Precinct 3 publishes a policy under which the resident supplies the pipe and marks the location, the precinct requests 811 locates and sets the culvert to grade on cement-stabilised sand within three to seven business days of locates clearing, and installation is charged per foot by pipe diameter, with $25 per foot for a single culvert up to twenty-four inches and $30 per foot above that. The precinct explicitly does not supply driveway surfacing material. Precinct 4 publishes a different arrangement in which an inspector determines the pipe size and the property owner installs it.
Two rules follow from this. Do not buy pipe until the precinct has specified it. And build the concrete to the set culvert grade rather than expecting the pipe to accommodate a slab that has already been formed. The permits guide covers the whole process.
Building the approach so it survives
The approach fails before the rest of the drive for two compounding reasons. It sits on fill placed over a pipe, and fill settles more than undisturbed ground unless it is compacted in thin lifts. And it is the part of the drive every vehicle crosses at an angle, often loaded, at the point where the road edge itself flexes under traffic.
- Compact the backfill over the pipe in lifts. A slab over loose backfill cracks straight down the middle of the crossing.
- Add thickness across the crossing relative to the run. This is one place six inches is nearly always justified.
- Keep the ditch flow line continuous through the crossing, and reshape the ditch either side rather than leaving it part-blocked.
- Size headwalls or sloped pipe ends to the pipe rather than eyeballing them.
- Set the approach width and turning radius for the vehicles that actually use it, including trailers and delivery trucks that will not attempt a tight turn.
The run
Along the length, the job is simpler and the arithmetic is bigger. Every decision multiplies by a large area, so thickness, width, and jointing all become material budget questions rather than details.
Width is the first one. Ten feet is workable for cars. Twelve is comfortable and gives room to walk beside a vehicle. Anything narrower than ten feet becomes tiring on a long run and unpleasant with a trailer. Widening at pinch points, particularly at gates and at bends, buys more usability per dollar than widening the whole thing.
Drainage along a long run is the item people underestimate. A few hundred feet of impermeable surface collects a surprising volume of water in a Gulf Coast downpour, and if the drive falls toward the house, that is where the water is being delivered. Cross fall shedding water to one side, and interception where the drive crosses a natural drainage path, are design questions rather than afterthoughts.
Joint layout matters more than on a short drive simply because there are so many more joints. The same rule applies, spacing in feet at roughly two to three times the thickness in inches, with panels kept close to square, and it is worth having drawn rather than improvised over three hundred feet.
The turnaround and parking area
Near the house is where the static loads live: the truck that parks in the same place every night, the trailer that sits all winter, the equipment. This is the section that justifies thickness, thickened edges, and reinforcement sized for the load. It is also the section people forget to include when measuring, and a turnaround adds a lot of square footage.

Where gravel is the honest answer
On a long rural drive, the sensible question is not concrete or gravel but where each one belongs. Concrete costs far more per square foot, and across three hundred feet that difference is a large number. Gravel is a fraction of the cost, and it needs topping up, it migrates in heavy rain, and on a slope it washes.
The compromise most acreage owners around Conroe end up at is concrete where the wear and the mess concentrate, which means the approach across the ditch and the parking and turnaround area at the house, with gravel or a stabilised surface along the run in between. That puts the money where vehicles turn, brake, and sit, and accepts maintenance where they simply drive straight. Practical items that only apply out here
- Truck access. A concrete truck is heavy and long. Whether it can get down the drive to pour the far end, or whether concrete has to be pumped or carried, is a real cost and worth establishing at quote stage.
- Staging the pour. A long drive is usually poured in sections over more than one day, which means planned construction joints rather than accidental ones.
- Utilities. Rural drives frequently have water lines, electrical runs, or septic components crossing them. Locating before excavating is not optional.
- Weather windows. A long drive is exposed for longer between prep and pour, so rain during the wet season is a schedule risk in a way it is not on a one-day suburban job.
- Gates and fencing. Gate positions, swing clearance, and whether a gate needs a level pad under it are all cheaper to sort out now than later.
