Comparison
Concrete or gravel
Both are legitimate answers in Montgomery County, and which one is right depends far more on the length of the drive and the slope of the ground than on anybody's preference.
This comparison usually gets written by somebody who sells one of the two, which is why it usually reaches a predictable conclusion. The useful version admits that gravel is the correct choice on a lot of properties around here, that concrete is the correct choice on others, and that the most common right answer is a combination.
Up-front cost
Concrete is the larger number by a wide margin. ConcreteNetwork's published price data, updated 14 July 2026, puts a plain broom-finish slab at $6.50 to $10.50 per square foot installed. Gravel, being crushed stone spread over a prepared surface, costs a small fraction of that per square foot.
On a suburban driveway of six hundred square feet, the difference is real but manageable. On three hundred feet of rural drive at twelve feet wide, that is thirty-six hundred square feet, and the difference stops being a preference and starts being a decision about what else does not get done this year. This is why the answer changes with length.
Maintenance
Gravel is not maintenance-free and nobody who has owned one thinks it is. Stone migrates under tyres, particularly at the point where vehicles turn and where they accelerate off the road. Ruts form. Potholes develop where water stands. A topping-up and regrading cycle is part of owning one, and on a long drive that cycle involves a delivery of material and a machine rather than an afternoon with a rake.
Concrete's maintenance is different in kind: keeping the joints and any cracks sealed so water does not get underneath. That is a small, occasional job on a sound slab. Where a decorative finish is involved, add a resealing cycle. Over a long ownership, concrete asks for less, and what it asks for is more predictable.
What happens in a downpour
This is where local conditions do the deciding. Southeast Texas gets intense convective rainfall, and a drive that slopes is a channel during it. Gravel on a slope moves downhill in heavy rain, and repeatedly redistributing the top layer of a drive to its lowest point is a specific and tiresome form of maintenance.
On flat ground the problem inverts. Gravel drains, and on the sandy surface soils common here a gravel drive over compacted base sheds water reasonably well. Concrete does not drain at all, which means the water has to go somewhere you have chosen, and on a long run that means designing cross fall and interception rather than hoping.
The wet-season subgrade question applies to both. USDA records a perched water table on the Splendora soil series, common in this county, sitting fifteen to twenty-eight inches down from December through April. A gravel drive over soft ground ruts. A concrete slab over soft ground cracks. Neither material substitutes for preparing the ground.
Heat and comfort
A concrete surface in full July sun is hot, though light grey concrete runs considerably cooler than dark asphalt. Gravel is cooler underfoot but harder to walk on, worse in heels or with a wheeled suitcase, and unpleasant for children on bikes. If the drive doubles as a place where people spend time rather than just a route for vehicles, concrete wins that comparison comfortably.
Dust, mud, and what comes into the house
Gravel makes dust in dry weather and mud where it meets grass in wet weather, and both of them travel indoors on shoes and tyres. On a short drive up to a front door, that is a real daily annoyance. On three hundred feet up to a house with a mudroom and a boot rack, it is background noise. Where the drive ends matters as much as what it is made of.
Vehicles and loads
Heavy vehicles are hard on gravel. A loaded truck, a gooseneck trailer, or equipment traffic churns a gravel surface at the points where it turns and stops, and those are exactly the points that then need attention. Concrete, built to the right thickness for the load, simply carries it.
Static loads are a different matter again. An RV or a trailer parked on gravel for a season settles into it, and jack pads sink. That is a pad question rather than a drive question, and it is one place concrete is clearly the answer regardless of what the rest of the drive is made of.
Resale and appearance
On a suburban lot in Conroe, Willis, or The Woodlands, a concrete driveway is what buyers expect, and a gravel one reads as unfinished. On acreage out toward Montgomery or Splendora, a gravel drive reads as entirely normal and nobody thinks twice about it. The expectation follows the setting rather than the material, which is another reason the answer is local.
The hybrid most people end up at
On acreage, the arrangement that keeps coming out ahead is concrete where wear and mess concentrate and gravel where vehicles simply drive straight. In practice that means:
- Concrete at the approach. Across the ditch crossing and out to the road, where vehicles turn at an angle, brake, and where the county right of way is involved anyway.
- Gravel along the run. The long straight section where traffic is light and the maintenance burden is lowest.
- Concrete at the house. The turnaround, the parking area, and any trailer or RV pad, where static loads and manoeuvring live.
That split also lets the work be staged across budgets and seasons: the approach this year, the parking area next, the run whenever it makes sense. Very few contractors will suggest it unprompted, and it is worth raising.
A third option worth knowing about
Between the two sits a stabilised gravel surface, where the stone is placed over a compacted base with a geotextile separation layer, sometimes with a cellular confinement grid. It costs more than plain gravel and much less than concrete, and it substantially reduces migration and rutting. On a long run over soft ground it is a reasonable middle answer, and it is worth asking about rather than treating the choice as binary.
